The film, adapted from a novel, tells a tragic love story between two AIDS-afflicted lovers. Kwok plays a primary school teacher who is sent from the city to teach in the countryside, but contracts AIDS and develops a crush on Zhang Ziyi's character, also an AIDS patient.
HIV/AIDS related subject matters are rarely touched upon in China, and always thought to be a taboo. This film is acclaimed to be able to make a change. Backed by the government, the film is said to be the first time the blood-selling scandal of the 1990s has been featured in mainstream Chinese culture.[1]
